Junior Boys & Jessy Lanza @ Babel, Malmö

We are delighted to announce that on next Friday, February 26th, Junior Boys are coming to Malmö!

What is more, they will be playing in one of our favourite clubs around town - Babel, the church turned turned into a nightclub.

This band, formed by Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus who both come from Ontario, Canada and who have been on stage now for more than ten years, had made a creative break for about five years since the release of their last album It’s all true in 2011.

Now they are back with a new LP, Big Black Coat, that came out on the beginnings of February of this year, and it seems that all this time waiting has really been worth it.

After listening to their new record thoroughly we can affirm that Junior Boys have decided to take a step forwards with their sound. One can clearly note certain differences in contrast to their previous albums, even if they stayed true to this very personal style of theirs that we appreciate that much.

Junior Boys still have that underlying friendly electronic ground, met by the sweet and sensual voice of Greenspan and those maximalistic pop synths that are thus characteristic for their sound. However, in contrast to their other albums, in Big Black Coat they managed to combine all those ingredients into a truly detailed and proper artistic way that one was not able to perceive in their music before.

We can hear the influences of artists like Kraftwerk, Prince, Arthur Russell, 10cc, Plastikman, Robert Hood or the Yellow Magic Orchestra, and when it comes to genres you can hear hints of Krautrock, IDM, Detroit Techno lines, Classic House, dreamy Pop, to name but a few.

A record, subtle, edgy and full of details that maintain those guys on the peak of the wave - if they ever had left that spot.

This friday in Sweden they will share the stage with another great artists, also originate from Ontario, Jessy Lanza, one of the big discoveries of the last years who has released her first album Pull My Hair Back, that was actually produced by Greenspan, via the well-respected British label Hyperdub in 2013. Jessy’s music is also moving between futuristic sounds and influences from the past among which we could perceive the sound of some 70s synths, Neo Soul, RnB, soft Footwork, experimental Electronic and, of course, the disturbing sound of her high vocal range. Jessy is also going to present her upcoming album Oh No that will be released in may, again via Hyperdub. Below you can listen to a sample of it, the song “It means I love you”.
